Chapter 6 An Ugly Daughter-in-law Must Meet Her In-laws.
As soon as the words were spoken, the car smoothly stopped at the entrance of the hospital staff dormitory.
"I'll go now," Alice Brown politely bid farewell, wrapping her shawl tightly around her.
Just as she was about to get off the car, a broad and warm hand grabbed her, "Take some time these days and come visit my old house for dinner."
"Ah? Old house?" Alice exclaimed, her brain crashing for the nth time tonight.
"Yeah, an ugly daughter-in-law must meet her in-laws," Benjamin Gregory calmly replied as he looked at her shocked face.
"Isn't it too soon?" Her mind was stuck on the words "meet in-laws," completely ignoring the "ugly daughter-in-law" part. After all, they had only known each other for half a month!
"There's still a month and a half until the wedding."
"Or are you preparing for the wedding first and not meeting the in-laws?" Benjamin Gregory asked without thinking.
"Well...then let's make it Friday. I don't have a night shift that day," she replied somewhat helplessly.
It was expected that they would meet his family before their marriage, but the wedding took her by surprise. She thought they would just get the certificate, pretend to be in love in front of others, and fulfill his physical needs, without considering a wedding at all.
Thinking about it, it was normal for someone like Benjamin to have a wedding.
"Okay, pack your things and I'll come pick you up on Friday. After dinner with my family, we'll go straight to my place to stay," he said before getting into the car and driving away.
"Hey, wait a minute! What happened to moving on Saturday?" Alice Brown looked at the rear of the car.
She truly understood what it meant to shoot oneself in the foot when moving stones. She had originally planned to move on Saturday but had now been forcefully
I did it to myself ahead of time.
"I'm not ugly!" It was as if she suddenly remembered something and shouted towards the retreating Maybach.
After a while, Alice turned around and didn't go back to the staff dormitory. Instead, she bought some fruits downstairs and headed towards the hospital ward.
She stood silently in front of a hospital room, watching her mother who was leaning against the bedside reading a book. Although her mother still had a sickly appearance, her spirits had clearly improved a lot. The surgery she had undergone half a month ago had been a success and she was recovering very well.
Letting out a satisfied sigh, she realized her mother felt a sense of belonging wherever she was.
She took a deep breath, smiled on her face, and softly pushed the door open.
"Mom, why haven't you slept yet?"
"My child is here. Why have you become thinner? Is your work too busy?" Alice's mom, being from the southern part of the country, called her daughter "child."
Alice's mom put down the book and lovingly looked at her daughter who had entered. Seeing her daughter becoming thinner again, she couldn't conceal her heartache. Originally a rich girl, she had matured and become responsible at a young age after following her. She had endured a lot of hardships for their livelihood.
In recent years, as her health slowly deteriorated, their small family relied solely on her daughter to support them. It was not just the daily living expenses but also the exorbitant medical and surgery fees they had to bear.
She had thought about leaving, no longer wanting to stay in this world and continue burdening her daughter. She believed she should have her own wonderful life at her age.
But she also feared that if she really left, the only person who cared and loved her in this world would be gone. In the future, if she got married and was bullied by her in-laws, she would have no one to cry to, no one to help from her natal home.
When she mentioned her natal home, it naturally referred to her home, where she was the only one left, the Brown family... They had long lost any connection with them~
"Why are you wearing a formal dress? Did you just come back from somewhere?" Alice's mom asked with concern, looking at her daughter's slightly tired face.
Looking at her mother's concerned expression and thinking about the fact that she was about to get married, while her mother remained completely unaware, Alice felt torn and struggled in her heart. It was a torment not knowing how to approach the subject.
But considering that her mother had to know about this, she did some mental preparation and bravely spilled everything.
"Mom, I'm getting married in a month and a half. The groom isn't Hans. We broke up half a month ago because he cheated on me with Suzie."
"The groom is Master Gregory Benjamin Gregory from the Gregory family. He is currently in charge of the Gregorys Group. The old lady of the Gregory family used to be my patient, so we got to know each other. Our marriage wasn't impulsive; it was carefully considered. He treats me well. Tonight, when Hans bullied me, he stood up for me and defended me."
Alice Brown finished all these words in one breath, expecting to receive a scolding from her mother. After all, getting married after knowing each other for only half a month was indeed a bit fast.
For a few seconds, the hospital room remained quiet, not even a single sound.
Even the sound of a needle dropping onto the ground can be heard clearly.
"Hans and who? Suzie?" Alice's mom heard about Hans cheating on Suzie and angrily slammed the book she had just been reading onto the ground.
"These two shameless individuals!" Previously, whenever either of them visited their home, she would entertain them lavishly with food and drinks. But now, they dared to harm her daughter. Do they think her family is easy to fool them?
Although Alice's mom is from the south, she is still hot-tempered when angered, especially when it comes to protecting her loved ones.
"Don't worry, Mom. Benjamin Gregory has already dealt with them for me," Alice Brown looked at her mother, who was angry and couldn't help but cry and smile. She remembered her mother's recent recovery and hurriedly tried to console her.
Alice's mom's hand still trembled with anger.
After about a minute, she suddenly spoke, "You said you are going to marry Benjamin Gregory? The current head of the Gregorys Group?"
Although Alice's mom is currently down and out, she used to be the wife of a wealthy family. She had some understanding of the various powers in the capital, especially the Gregory family, a century-old prominent family.
Alice nodded, "Yes, it's him."
Her mom fell silent for a while. She moved her fingers slightly and looked at her seriously, asking, "Did he pay for my surgery? Child, tell Mom the truth. Did you marry him because of the cost of my operation?"
"Mom, I don't want to deceive you. The surgery cost was one part of the reason. Another part is because he can protect me, and I'm willing to be protected by him. Mom, you know that I don't believe in love. Even when I was with Hans, it wasn't because I loved him, but because I thought he was suitable."
"Besides, Benjamin Gregory treats me well. After getting married, we won't have to live with our elders, there won't be any conflicts with in-laws. We'll respect each other and grow old together. There's nothing wrong with that."
Alice blurted out a string of words to convince her mom. Maybe it started when her older "sister" appeared in the Brown family that she stopped believing in love. With time, the corruption within the noble circles became common and she became numb to it.
Such things are just too common.
In the past, she wanted to have a simple life with Hans. Clearly, she made a mistake.
And now, entrusting her remaining years of married life to Benjamin Gregory, she doesn't really know how it will turn out. He is currently protective of her because she will be the future Mrs. Benjamin, but she can't say this to her mother. Her mother only needs to know that Benjamin Gregory is good to her, and that's enough.
Listening to her daughter's words, Alice's mom opened her mouth to say something but ultimately remained silent.
