Chapter 8 Mr. Brooks is Not to be Messed With

Gavin's slender fingers stiffened slightly as his gaze met Harper's, and his eyes narrowed almost imperceptibly.

What an intense gaze.

She seemed casually staring at him, but her eyes had a certain aggressiveness, as if she could still penetrate his mask and see his face.

The two of them locked eyes for a while before Gavin averted his gaze and smiled. "Indeed, it's worth more than my necklace."

Upon hearing this, the members of the Powell family widened their eyes.

What was wrong with Mr. Brooks?

That thing was obviously cheap, so why did he say it was worth more than the Crystal Heart?

Gavin pocketed the item and lowered his gaze to Harper. "Are you leaving? I'll accompany you!"

"Fine." Harper turned around without any courtesy and walked away.

"Grandma, are we really going to let Harper marry Mr. Brooks? She hasn't even married yet and she's already so arrogant. If she does get married, won't she bully us?" Lucy gritted her teeth and spoke in frustration.

She had been driven almost crazy by Harper just now, but with Mr. Brooks present, she didn't dare to do anything.

Madam Powell's expression also turned grim. She looked at Piper, her eyes growing cold. "Piper, do you really want to marry Mr. Brooks?"

Piper pursed her lips, her eyes filled with jealousy that was about to burst out. But in front of Madam Powell, she suppressed her envy.

She nodded and whispered, "Yes, Grandma. After all, Harper wasn't raised in our family, so she has no affection towards us. Now she's taking advantage of Mr. Brooks' status to bully you all. I can't overlook it. I am also a child of the Powell family, and I should do something for the Powell family."

"Good." Madam Powell smiled with satisfaction. "Here's what we'll do. Let's go home first, and I'll figure out a solution to this matter."

No one in the Powell family objected to Madam Powell's decision. They all followed her back home.

On the way to take Harper home, Gavin asked Jayden and Ben to go ahead.

He drove with Harper sitting in the front passenger seat. Throughout the journey, Harper leaned against the seat and kept looking down at her phone. Occasionally, the passing road lights added a touch of radiance to Harper's already cold face.

"If you don't want to, I can cancel the engagement." Halfway through the drive, Gavin turned his head slightly and glanced at Harper, speaking calmly.

Harper had just started a new game when she heard the words. She looked up, raised an eyebrow, and looked at him intently.

Gavin's fingers gripped the steering wheel, and the bones of his knuckles were distinct as his fingertips turned pale. He stopped the car, leaning slightly, and his thin lips parted slightly. "If you're forced, you can choose not to get married."

Harper leaned her hand against the window, propping her head lazily. Her voice was indifferent. "I heard you're quite wealthy."

"More so than the average person." Gavin opened the window and lit a cigarette.

"And quite influential," Harper's voice was soft, as if she was talking about something ordinary.

"Most people don't dare to provoke me." Gavin took a drag of his cigarette, exhaling a ring of smoke. He tilted his head slightly, revealing a hint of depth in his eyes.

Harper nodded, her brows furrowing. "I lack money and influence."

Gavin's actions paused for a moment before he smirked. "Alright."

He threw away the cigarette butt and restarted the car.

Instead of taking Harper back to the Powell Family, he took her out for dinner first.

During the dinner with the Powell Family that night, neither Gavin nor any of the Powell Family members ate. Gavin figured that Harper must be hungry.

After dinner, Gavin dropped Harper off at the Powell Family's entrance. Once his car was out of sight, then she squinted her eyes and turned to Sitges City Central Hospital.

She stopped in front of an office building behind the inpatient department.

The office building's door was locked, and it was pitch-black inside. Harper looked up and a teasing smile appeared on her lips.

Glancing around, she circled to the back of the office building and retrieved a hand from her pocket. With practiced movements, she leaped onto the wall, grabbing onto the second-floor window's bars and flipping herself up.

In a few swift movements, she climbed to the sixth floor, opened a window of a room, and jumped inside.

The light from outside street lamps faintly shone into the room, illuminating it brightly.

She walked directly to a cabinet filled with numerous documents and took out a small silver needle from her pocket, skillfully inserting it into the keyhole.

"Click!"

The cabinet opened.

Harper turned on her phone's flashlight and searched through the pile of files for a while before finally finding the thing she was looking for.

After a moment, Harper's attractive brows furrowed, her eyes narrowing. A chill emanated from her entire being.

In her hand was Liam's donation agreement, and neatly signed at the bottom was Liam's name. It was his handwriting.

Harper's narrowed eyes were filled with a coldness.

Footsteps could be heard in the corridor. Harper put away the agreement and jumped out of the window.

On her way back, Harper dialed Albert's number.

"The donation agreement is real!" The weather today was a bit cold, and a gust of chilly wind blew towards her face.

Albert was dealing with a troublesome matter when he heard her words, surprised as he looked up. "Really? You're not joking?"

Harper pushed down her duckbill cap and felt annoyed and restless.

"It’s his handwritten signature."

"This is strange. He was in a car accident, and his family didn't arrive at the hospital before his heart was taken. At that time, he should have been unconscious and unable to sign personally," Albert put away his casual demeanor and looked serious.

They always thought that the donation agreement was forged, which was why Liam's heart was hastily taken away.

But they didn't expect it to be Liam's own handwritten signature.

Harper squinted her eyes, exuding a dangerous aura. "This matter is not simple."

When she had arrived at the hospital after Liam's accident, she was informed that he had signed a heart donation agreement, underwent surgery, and was then taken for cremation.

From Liam's accident to her arrival, it was only two hours, yet the hospital couldn't wait for his family to come and had hurriedly taken him to the crematorium.

She had gone to ask the doctor who Liam's heart was donated to, but the doctor refused to say.

In order to uncover the truth, she used all the resources she could to investigate, even seeking help from high-ranking individuals, but they all returned empty-handed.

Everyone told her that this matter could not be investigated.

Unyielding, Harper conducted various investigations and discovered that Gavin had performed a heart surgery at this hospital on the same day.

It couldn't be so coincidental that Liam had just donated his heart and Gavin underwent surgery.

They definitely had the ability to create the accident, then quietly take Liam's heart.

But it was Liam's own handwritten signature.

What went wrong amidst all this? She wondered.

"In my opinion, you shouldn’t go as far as marrying Gavin. Poison him directly, and the truth will come out," Albert gritted his teeth.

"He's not as simple as you think," Harper's cold gaze flashed with a hint of mischief, her red lips slightly curved.

"Do you want me to come now and help you?" Albert furrowed his brows. "If Gavin isn't as simple as he appears, you're in danger!"

"No need, I can handle it," Harper said coldly and hung up the phone.
