Chapter 2 Hidden Boss
Leaving the Powell Mansion, it was already dark outside.
Harper, following Elijah and Zoe, returned to the Powell family in Sitges City, a prominent family ranked second in assets.
"Mr. Powell, Mrs. Powell," a middle-aged woman opened the door, and Zoe called her Bella.
Bella glanced at Harper behind them, her eyes naturally revealing a look of disdain, but her face respectfully said, "This must be Miss Morris, right?"
"Bella, take her luggage upstairs and give her the new set of pajamas I just bought, let her take a bath later," Zoe was bothered throughout their journey. She couldn't forget the mocking gazes from the Powell family.
Although they said Harper lacked manners, who didn't know that what they meant was that, , in order to cling to a powerful family, Zoe abandoned her own daughter.
She dared not vent her anger at the Powell family, but she never treated Harper kindly. "Your grandmother has been sent to the hospital, in a VIP ward. It will cost four hundred thousand dollars for a month. I have to remind you that we are spending such a huge amount of money. You must obey me."
"Shut up!" Zoe's words had just fallen when Elijah rebuked with a cold face, "She is your daughter. How can you speak like that?"
Zoe felt wronged, tears welling up in her eyes. "I did all this for our family. Do you want Piper to marry the Brooks?"
Elijah didn't say a word; his eyebrows furrowed as he fell silent for a moment, then looked at Harper. "If you don't want to marry Mr. Brooks, I can find a way to refuse."
Harper lifted her gaze to look at him. Elijah was fifty years old, but he took care of himself well, showing no traces of time on his face. His eyes would unintentionally reveal sharpness, but in front of Harper, he tried to maintain a gentle demeanor.
Harper lowered her eyes. She pursed her lips and said, "I am willing."
"You..." Elijah wanted to say something, but Harper interrupted him.
"I need some rest." She lowered her eyes, her clean face devoid of expression, a sense of irritation spreading between her brows.
After sitting in the car all day, she was tired and had no mood to deal with anyone. Elijah watched her slender figure as a strange feeling gripped his heart. After a moment of silence, he asked again, "Are you really not considering it anymore? This is a lifelong matter."
Zoe proposed that Harper marry into the Brooks family, but Elijah disagreed. This child had suffered without her mother since she was young, enduring hardships in the countryside with her grandmother. He couldn't bear to simply give her lifetime up like this.
"No," without looking back, Harper followed Bella upstairs.
Harper quickly unpacked her luggage and then opened the black computer on the desk. The desktop of the computer was clean, without a single software. Her fingers swiftly tapped on the computer, and soon, a page popped up, displaying lines of code.
Two minutes later, she stopped. The computer displayed a document, and as she stared at it, a smile curled on her red lips. Gavin Brooks.
Resting her chin on her hand, she gazed aggressively at the man in the photo. After a moment, she closed the document and went to take a shower.
When she finished showering, someone sent her a WeChat video. With one hand holding a towel to dry her hair, she used the other hand to answer the video call.
"I've been exposed." On the other end of the video was a man with brown hair, green eyes, a high nose, and a perfect figure, exuding a noble aura.
Harper paused, sat on the chair, threw away the towel, and began operating on her device. After a moment, she picked up the towel again and dried her hair. "Alright."
Ever since she was young, Harper had realized that she was different from others. At the age of seven, she completed all the high school courses. At ten, she assembled a complete computer and hacked into a hacker website, and until now, no one had discovered it was her.
The person in the video was Albert Blake, a genius researcher who had produced numerous internationally recognized works, each worth a fortune when sold. Many people wanted to weaponize Albert’s research.
Over the years, if it weren't for Harper, Albert would have died countless times. They had a deep bond, and although Harper only knew Albert as a research genius, she could guess that his identity was more than that. She never inquired about it though.
They understood each other and respected each other. Albert found a safe place, and put a cigarette in his mouth. Harper glanced at him. "Is it troublesome?"
"A bit." Albert nodded. "But it's nothing major. In one-on-one combat, these people are no match for me. The fucking group attacks are the most annoying." Albert couldn't help but curse.
"Do you want me to help you solve it?" The water stains in Harper's hair dried up as she threw away the towel, poured a glass of water, and took a sip.
"No need." Albert waved his hand. "I can handle it. You're investigating Gavin, right? Don't expose yourself because of me."
Harper shrugged, curled her legs, rested her chin on her legs, and her voice carried a hint of weariness. "Whatever."
"I'll come find you once I'm done here." Albert paused. "Control your temper a bit. That Gavin isn't simple."
"Stop nagging." Harper felt a bit irritated. "I'm hanging up."
Sitges City, Victoria Villa.
Gavin stood by the French window. Outside, faint light and shadows came in, elongating his figure. His distinct features seemed as though they were exquisitely carved by God himself, with a high nose bridge and cold thin lips.
Under the play of light and shadow, his naturally regal aura emanated, and his deep eyes resembled an unfathomable pool, lips pursed, his face devoid of expression.
"Mr. Brooks, the task you gave me has been completed. How will you proceed next?"
“The Powell family originally planned for Piper to come over, but they switched to Harper instead." Behind Gavin, Ben in a black suit, stood respectfully, his voice deep and gloomy. "She is Mrs. Powell's eldest daughter. Should I go find them?"
"No need." Gavin turned around, his voice lacking emotion.
"I heard that Harper has a bad character. From elementary to high school, she skipped classes and got into fights. She even got expelled before finishing high school. She doesn't even have a high school diploma. How can she be worthy of the Mrs. Brooks title?" Ben Cook was annoyed. Did the Powell family dare to deceive Mr. Brooks without knowing the consequences?
Gavin raised an eyebrow, his gaze deep. "Who do you think is worthy of being Mrs. Brooks?"
"At the very least, someone outstanding," Ben said.
Gavin narrowed his eyes. "With my current condition, who would be willing to marry an outstanding person like me?"
Ben lowered his head and pursed his lips. "I will find Ghost Face and have him cure your illness."
"Ghost Face is not so easy to find." If he was easy to find, there wouldn't have been no news for several months. Gavin waved his hand. "Go and prepare a gift. We cannot afford to lack etiquette during my first meeting with my fiancée."
"But..." Ben wanted to say something, but Gavin gave him a cold glance, and he could only shut his mouth.
